Attorneys Douglas Poland & Erin Deeley present for State Bar on Wisconsin’s election administration and recount laws

Attorneys Douglas M. Poland and Erin Deeley will present on a panel on Thursday, June 20, at the State Bar of Wisconsin’s Annual Meeting and Conference in Green Bay. Their presentation is part of a three-day program of CLEs and other sessions for legal professionals. “Win, Lose, or Draw Names: Navigating Recounts and Other Challenges to Administering Elections in Wisconsin” will identify and discuss the latest and most significant challenges that election officials across Wisconsin face as they administer elections in this presidential election year, and the role of attorneys for municipalities, campaigns, candidates, and voters in election law and administration. The program will include a more in-depth focus on Wisconsin’s recount statute, which places an enormous amount of responsibility on municipalities to administer recounts in accordance with express statutory requirements. The program will highlight the main actors in a recount, their responsibilities, and the profound challenges of administering a recount or defending a recount appeal in the expedited timelines inherent to election disputes. It will also challenge everything attorneys assume about preservation and waiver. Finally, the program will cover the different forms of relief should a recount reveal defects in the manner in which an election was administered.
