Election Matters seminar series, back for 2026, hosted by Stafford Rosenbaum LLP
Sponsored in its entirety by Stafford Rosenbaum, Election Matters 2026 is a series of free seminars hosted by the Elections Research Center and State Democracy Research Initiative (SDRI) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The educational series will bring together diverse experts to tackle evolving election-related issues.
Join us for “2026 Midterm Elections: Risks and Responses” on Friday, October 9, 2026, from 12:00-1:15pm Central, with a light lunch provided, at the University of Wisconsin Law School or virtual. This Election Matters panel will examine potential risks to midterm election integrity and explore strategies that election officials, the legal community, journalists, and voters can use to defend against them. Panelists will include David Becker (The Center for Election Innovation & Research), Karen Brinson Bell (Advance Elections), Josh Chafetz (Georgetown University), and Christine Sun (States United Democracy Center), and will be moderated by Elections Research Center Director Professor Barry Burden.
The March 6, 2026, Election Matters seminar, “Election Matters 2026: The Battle Over Mid-Decade Redistricting,” included an update on mid-2020s redistricting efforts and recent developments within the context of broader legal debates about gerrymandering; the panelists were Michael Li (Brennan Center for Justice), Sara Sadhwani (Pomona College), and Nicholas Stephanopoulos (Harvard Law School), with SDRI faculty co-director Rob Yablon moderating. The July 8, 2026 Election Matters seminar, “Year in Review: Democracy Litigation in SCOTUS and the States,” included discussion on case law over the previous 12 months, highlighting significant democracy-related decisions at both the state and federal levels; the panelists were Special Counsel Amit Agarwal of Protect Democracy, Chief Counsel Christina Bull Arndt of the California Department of Justice, Attorney Julie Murray of the ACLU State Supreme Court Initiative, and former U.S. Solicitor General Don Verrilli, with SDRI faculty co-director Rob Yablon moderating.
