Good news for employers! On April 6, 2012, Governor Walker signed into law a bill that repeals legislation that permitted employees who successfully sued their employers for employment discrimination to recover compensatory and punitive damages. Available remedies are now limited to back pay, out-of-pocket expenses, reinstatement or front pay, and attorneys' fees. The legislation will likely make it more difficult for employees to obtain larger settlements because employers no longer face the specter of high damage awards and may be more willing to roll the dice and litigate the claim.
