On the Job

Attorney Tom Solheim’s Practice

Attorney Tom Solheim’s practice includes acquisitions, financings, venture capital transactions, initial organizations of businesses, tax-exempt organizations, real estate leasing and financing, as well as large institutional investments. Clients range from small closely-held businesses and startups to large banks, foundations, institutional investors, and governmental entities.

Mr. Solheim also provides assistance with contracts, employment matters, international transactions, and regulatory compliance. He practices before administrative agencies, especially tax and financing authorities.

Mr. Solheim graduated from Dartmouth College in 1969 with a degree in physics, afterward serving as a shipboard engineering officer in the US Coast Guard, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Commander before being discharged from the reserve. He attended the University of Wisconsin Law School, serving as Editor-in-Chief of The Wisconsin Law Review and graduating magna cum laude in 1976.

Mr. Solheim has particular interest and expertise in finance and governance law regarding not-for-profit entities. He was intimately involved in developing and articulating the governance procedures for the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery, the $210 million showpiece facility jointly operated by the Morgridge Institute for Research and the UW Wisconsin Institute for Discovery. He also helped organize the University Research Park of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Mr. Solheim’s physics and shipboard engineering background make him particularly conversant about law relative to science, technology, and engineering. He has been selected for inclusion in Wisconsin Super Lawyers and as one of Madison’s Best Lawyers by Madison Magazine.
